Monterrico Beach

... And we're back!

It's been over four months since Kaycie and I have added to our blog. Ironically, we have been too busy "Living in Guatemala!" A lot has changed. I'll try my best to update without overwhelming.

After working November and December, Kaycie and I decided to spend the holiday with family. We returned to Nebraska for the last week of 2011. It was a great vacation, although it felt like a short one. Upon returning to Guatemala, we said despedida (farewell) to our hosts, Christopher and Nelly and moved into an apartment. I think part of the reason we haven't blogged in forever, is that our internet situation has changed. We now use a TIGO mobile internet USB stick, which Kaycie has named "Hammond." Another reason is that a lot of our free time is spent cooking, doing dishes, cleaning the house and doing laundry. We do a pretty good job of sharing responsibilities around the house. The culture in Guatemala has women do all of the cooking, cleaning and laundry. I tried to persuade Kaycie to adopt the culture here, but she didn't buy it...

After living in the apartment for about another two months, we decided to take a trip. On February 25, we left for Monterrico, a black sand beach on the Pacific Ocean. Here are some of the best photos from our travels.

The Pacific Ocean from our hotel, El Mangle.

Those windows look out onto the beach.

A view of the pools from our 3rd floor room.

This is El Mangle from the beach.
STONE turtle!!!

See the black sand?

A caiman at the Reptile Garden.

Iguanas are almost as cool as turtles.
BIG turtles!!!

We took a pic while waiting...

...for the turtle lady!

BABY turtles!!!

OUR turtles!!! Donatello (left) and Henrietta (right).
"One of most magical things I've ever done!"
I think these are Loggerhead turtles.

I'm sure this photo has some "power animal" symbolism going on...

The turtle lady said these babies were born THAT morning.

Kaycie's turtle is winning. And mine is following her turtle-trail.

They made it into the ocean just before sunset.
I think we have a dozen sunset photos from as many Guatemala locations.

A little plane flew by...

...still see it?

At 5am the next morning (it was still dark) we took a boat tour of the mangroves...

...so these photos are not in chronological order.

White heron taking flight.

Hourglass.

This bird was the mascot of a local restaurant: The Pelican

Guatemalan gondola.

First sign of light...

...at 20 past 6...
...on Sunday, February 26.
